The Keto Diet!
There are literally hundreds of diets out there that promote fat loss, health benefits and promise to be the latest and greatest addition to your life. But do they really work? Do they deliver all that is promised? Are they all to good to be true?
Well over the next few weeks I will be testing and trialling the latest diet to promote fat loss and health benefits beyond perfect.
Commonly known as the Keto diet and more know in the medical industry to help cancer patients, The Ketosis Diet is a very low-carb diet, that turns the body into a fat-burning machine. It has many potential benefits for weight loss, health and performance. But there are also potential drawbacks and side effects.
A keto diet is designed specifically to result in ketosis. It’s possible to measure and adapt to reach optimal ketone levels for health, weight loss, or for physical and mental performance.
What is Ketosis?
The “keto” in a ketogenic diet comes from the fact that it makes the body produce small fuel molecules called “ketones”
Ketones are produced if you eat very few carbs (that are broken down into blood sugar) and only moderate amounts of protein (excess protein can be converted to blood sugar).
Ketones are produced in the liver, from fat. They are then consumed as fuel in the body, including by the brain. This is important as the brain is a hungry organ that consumes lots of energy every day, and it can’t run on fat directly. It can only run on glucose (blood sugar)… or ketones.
On a ketogenic diet your entire body switches its fuel supply to run almost entirely on fat. Insulin levels become very low and fat burning increases dramatically. It becomes easy to access your fat stores to burn them off. This is obviously great if you’re trying to lose weight, but there are also other less obvious benefits.
- Weight Loss
- Improved Mental Focus
- Reversal of Type 2 Diabetes
- Increased Physical Endurance
Over the next 12 weeks both myself and one of my colleagues, Chris will be going through our own interpretation of the diet and I will update through my blogs on the progress and how I feel, look and my opinions of the diet itself. I will also include the recipes I use.
Proof that it does work is the main reason I want test this bad boy of a diet out. One of the members of my Gym and a frequent visitor to my group classes Craig, has been on this diet now for over 8 weeks and has transformed himself in an amazing way. Teamed together with a steady exercise regime Craig has lost an amazing 15kg since staring the Keto diet.
So hey lets give this bad boy a go and see where it takes me.
